They say that curiosity killed the cat and there is no doubt that cats are inquisitive by nature. Therefore it is important that you keep the environment as safe as possible for your cat

Some cats like to wander and will often spend a considerable amount of the day or night away from their homes. Short of keeping it locked in which for many cats goes against their natural instincts there are one or two steps that you can take to avoid losing your animal. At the very least you should put a collar with your contact details attached or better still have your cat micro chipped.

Micro chipping is something that your vet can do and is a painless procedure which installs an identifiable microchip into your cat. If your cat becomes lost the chip can be read using a “chip reader” which will identify the cat and its owner and it can be returned to you.

If you live near a busy main road this can become a major concern for any cat owner and you should really consider if this is the best environment to bring a cat too. Most cats learn to avoid traffic but there are still unfortunately too many cat road deaths every year. The only positive action an owner can take is to put a reflective collar on their animal to make them more visible at night.

Some owners will keep their cats locked inside the home or have their garden fenced in to keep their pet close. Most cats need an area to roam and the majority are also very agile and can climb and escape from all but the most secure areas.

Cats can also be vulnerable from attack from other animals, especially dogs who can become quite vicious towards felines if given the opportunity.

By having your cat neutered you can reduce the chance of your cat wandering around the local area looking for other cats. Neutering cam also reduces a cat’s natural aggressiveness, and this is especially true in the case of toms.

Before you take on the responsibility of a cat you need to give serious consideration to the environment that you are introducing the cat into. Is it going to be safe for your new pet and if not what can you do to improve it?
