Cat urine has a very distinctive smell and if your cat starts to pee around the house you will quickly become aware of the smell. No matter how much you love your cat it is not a smell you will want around your house. Unfortunately it is not the easiest of smells to get rid of and even if you do manage it there is no guarantee your cat will not repeat the act again.

The first thing to realize is that a cat will have some reason for ignoring its litter box. You cat will not have suddenly decided to be awkward or spiteful. If you can find the cause of the stress and take some action this may solve the problem. As well as trying to get you’re pet to stop peeing around the home you also have the problem of how to get rid of the smell. Cat urine contains uric acid crystals and water has very little effect. Any treatment to work has to break down the crystals and many of the commercial products designed to remove the smell are enzyme based. If you search the Internet you will also find plenty of home made remedies. Possibly the most popular of these are white vinegar or a solution of hydrogen peroxide.

In summary the problem can be broken down into two parts, firstly you need to discover the cause in your cat’s change of habit. Having identified the cause whether it be clinical or social you need to take the necessary action to resolve the problem. Secondly you need to treat the area as quickly as possible to remove the lingering smell.
