Why do such loveable animals as cats do this?

There are several reasons why a cat might misbehave and by understanding these reasons we may be able to get our cats out of any of these bad habits that they might have. Cats are like people, there are some who will never willingly misbehave whilst there are others who will test their owner’s patience to the limit.

The causes of misbehaviour.

The most obvious one is that the cat is bored. Let’s face it a cat left on its own for long periods of time may misbehave simply to seek attention. Also they need to use up some of that energy that all felines possess. This can be an even bigger problem for an animal that does not have access to the outdoors.

As a cat owner you owe it to your pet to spend some time with it and give it the attention that we all need at times. Do be careful though not to do this directly after your cat has committed some misdemeanour as this might give it the idea that misbehaving is the best way to get your attention.

Tom cats are by nature very sexually active and if they become frustrated this can lead to behavioural problems. It can be the same with Queens when they come on heat. Unless your cat is a pedigree and you intend to breed from it than males cats should be neutered and female cats spayed. After this operation you will find your cat  far less hyped and less inclined to misbehave.

Cats do not go out of their way to annoy their owners but you must make them understand when they have done wrong. I would never advocate hitting any animal but you should adopt a stern tone and make it plain that you are not happy.

What you have to avoid is confusing your cat into thinking that you are playing with it when you are in fact trying to chastise it. If a cat begins to believe this it will misbehave all the more.

Generally cats far prefer rewards than punishment and providing you are prepared to spend time with your pet it quickly learn right from wrong.
